With the good and the great of Europe’s elite clubs convening in Monaco for this evening’s Champions League draw, there ought to be no shortage of opportunities for late-doors horse-trading ahead of the closure of the European transfer window on Monday.
Unwanted by Chelsea, midfielder Tiémoué Bakayoko has bought a one-way ticket to the principality and has apparently already agreed terms to rejoin Monaco on loan, with a view to making the switch permanent for £32m at the end of the season. Also surplus to requirements at Chelsea, Brazilian winger Kenedy could be off to Serie A side Sassuolo.
One of several players Juventus are desperate to get off their payroll in a bid to trim their squad, Mario Mandzukic is wanted by Paris Saint-Germain, but is ready to hang fire in Turin and weigh up his options in January. The 33-year-old Croatian striker was linked with a move to Manchester United which never materialised this summer, but Roma remain hopeful of luring him to the Italian capital. The Italian side are also still in hot pursuit of Liverpool central defender Dejan Lovren.
That grunting sound you can hear is Real Madrid reserve goalkeeper Keylor Navas “pushing” for a move to Paris Saint-Germain, where Ousmane Dembélé is causing no end of stress. The French champions want the striker in a well-documented cash-plus-swap deal for Neymar, but the 22-year-old is standing his ground and refusing to leave the Camp Nou.
And finally, Real Sociedad want Nacho Monreal and his Arsenal boss Unai Emery will not stand in his way if the left-back decides to join the Spanish side. In the final year of his contract at the Emirates, Monreal has been offered a two-year deal by the Basque team with an option for a further 12 months. Arsenal’s longest serving player, Monreal has also been told he is welcome to stay in London and leave on a free transfer come season’s end.

Fornals on a high
Pablo Fornals has accepted and admitted that he is going to need some time to aduust to life in the Premier League after arriving from Spain.
But he will have been helped by the match at Newport County which saw him demosntrate great movement at time along with his first goal for the club.
And he is virtually certain to remain in the squad for the game against Norwich City at the weekend which may well give the manager an opportunity to give him some valuable playing time.
After spending around £25 million on a player that Pelle and Mario Husillos were tracking for a long time the fans are not unnaturally keen to see what he’s got.
And their appetites were whetted even more as he started to strut his stuff against the League Two in Wales and hopefully his confidence will now have taken the sort of boost it needs to see him stepping up to his new career in the world’s top league. .
Commenting on the game the Spanish under 21 international said: “I’m so happy. I tried to score with three chances and I got the goal with the third.
“The first one hit the post, the second the goalkeeper stopped the ball, so with the third I’m so happy I’m able to get my first goal in competition.
“It was nice that the third one came so close to the goal! I need to score, I feel good in the team and these little things help me to stay happy.
“We’ve won two in a row and we need to keep on winning to achieve our aims and to be successful.”

No more false dawns as Wilshere makes double pledge at West Ham
Jack Wilshere is adamant his injury problems are behind him once and for all and has targeted winning silverware at West Ham.
Wilshere scored his first Hammers goal on Tuesday as Manuel Pellegrini’s side eased into the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win at Newport. The draw for the third round can be seen here.
It was the England midfielder’s first goal for 19 months – his previous one coming for former club Arsenal in January 2018 – and launched a journey that Wilshere hopes will take the Hammers all the way to Wembley.
West Ham’s last major trophy success came nearly 40 years ago, when Trevor Brooking’s famous header decided the 1980 FA Cup final against Arsenal.
Wilshere said: “It’s been a long time since this club won a trophy and it’s a shame because we’ve got such a big fan base.
“I’d know they’d love a trophy and so would we.
“We’ve got a lot of quality in this team and we’ve got belief that we can finish as high as possible.
“We can possibly get into Europe and have a right go in one of the cups and win a trophy for the fans.”
Wilshere made only four Premier League starts last season as he was plagued by injuries following his move from Arsenal.
The 27-year-old was prevented from completing his first 90 minutes in over a year when he was substituted in the closing stages at Newport.
But Wilshere believes he has emerged from his injury nightmare, saying: “It’s been a tough time since I’ve been here and now I finally feel I’m over those problems.
“I’m working every day of the week. I’m improving, I’ve played some games, got some minutes and I feel like I can really push on now.
“It’s difficult when you come to a new club. You want to have a period of time in the team.
“It was frustrating and I didn’t feel I was part of the team. It was important for me to have a good pre-season, stay around the boys and be training and improving every day.
“I’ve done that so I feel good, and I just want to play as many games as possible.
“I’ll keep giving my all in matches and see where it gets me. I want to be the best I can be, if that was the level that I was at before then brilliant.
“If it’s better, then hopefully I can push on and improve every aspect of my game and importantly stay fit.”
